H-Town Arts in conjunction with Sparrow and the Nest presents Charles Mingus’ 1959 landmark jazz album Mingus Ah Um in an exclusive live performance. This concert launches what will become a series of intimate house concerts featuring recreations of classic jazz albums. Mingus Ah Um is an outstanding recording in the jazz canon, praised for its balance of the traditional and the avant garde, musical sophistication and utter chaos—it is a collection of songs that perfectly convey the personality of its creator, bassist Charles Mingus.
Outside of The Mingus Big Band in New York City, concerts featuring only Mingus music are very rare due to its extreme difficulty and uncommon characteristics. The sextet of musicians tackling this challenge represent an accomplished group within Houston’s jazz scene:
Ryan Gabbart, trombone, musical director
Dean Moore, alto saxophone
Ernesto Vega, tenor saxophone
Andrew Lienhard, piano
Thomas Helton, upright bass
Joe Slezak, drums
This multimedia event will include a lecture, a program hand-out, and a video to accompany the live music. The performance will also be recorded in front of the live audience. Homemade hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be provided with ticket purchase.
