Whether you're new to Houston or a seventh-gen Texan, it's always fun to learn more about the history of the Bayou City. Come dig deeper into our region's history with the Houston Archives Bazaar 2017, hosted by local archivists. Got a story? Record your own oral history. Learn about preserving family photographs and documents, and dig deeper into the amazing history of Olivewood Cemetery, the resting place for many freed slaves and some of our region's earliest black residents. Representatives from private, public, university and museum libraries will be on hand with the 411 on all things Texas. Grab a snack from Boombox Taco or Chocolate Ice Cream Company and end this day just a bit smarter than when you woke up. 2 to 6 p.m. September 10. White Oak Music Hall, 2915 North Main. For information, visit houstonarchivists.org/bazaar. Free. [Organizer's description:] Archivists of the Houston Area - Join the Archivists of the Houston Area for the Houston Archives Bazaar on Sunday, September 10 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at White Oak Music Hall, 2915 N Main St, Houston, TX 77009. The Bazaar will feature over a dozen Houston and Gulf Coast-area archives and affiliated organizations offering fun and interactive ways for locals to learn more about the historical resources and services available in our region. Come discover the photographs, documents, films, maps, and more held in the incredible archival collections in and around Houston! The event is free for everyone and a great way to experience Houston’s diverse history. The participating organizations will show off their amazing collections, inform attendees about local resources, and offer advice on caring for their own important photographs, letters, and digital media. Other attractions include a film screening featuring archival footage and an oral history booth to record your Houston story for future generations (like a StoryCorps for Houston!). Confirmed speakers include Mike Vance, Janet Wagner (and more!) who will discuss various ways they have used archives. At the Preservation Station, you can bring your cherished materials, such as photographs, old letters, and family scrapbooks, to learn from professionals how to best preserve your memories. The Archivists of the Houston Area (AHA!) is a professional organization that exists to increase contact and communication between archivists and those working with records, to provide opportunities for professional development, and to promote archival repositories and activities in the greater Houston, Texas area.
