Houston Sudbury School and Bayou City Play are hosting the Houston premier of the award-winning short film, The Land, with the filmmaker Erin Davis present. The screening will be followed by a panel and discussion of children, risk and play, and a pop-up adventure playground for children. The event is free and open to the public.
Erin Davis' film features an "adventure" playground in Wales, where children are free to climb trees, light fires, and use hammers and nails to create their own play-space. At the heart of the adventure playground model is the belief that kids are empowered when they learn to manage risks on their own. Houston has one of only six site-based adventure playgrounds in the US at The Parish School. As children's lives become more adult-structured, filled with screen time and homework, and limited to activity in their homes, conversation about play that promotes independence, resilience, identity, and empowerment are vital.
