Ten years after the Cuban Revolution, Cuban director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea produced this feature about a man living Cuba before, during, and after the revolution. Memorias del subdesarrollo is a tour-de-force, combining psychological portraiture with news footage, prosodically whirling with the tumult of a time of profound change, like a shoe in a dryer. It is a study in alienation, dotted with the venal vices, an affirmation that human nature is simply not up to the task of being wholly modern.
