Catherine Colangelo’s work gives nod to traditions that existed long before our time. Her paintings stem from a visual vocabulary as varied as illuminated manuscripts, Indian and Islamic miniatures, textiles, and visionary art. These vibrant and unusual works are painstakingly created with graphite and gouache on muslin, using a process of concentration and skill that is also comforting and meditative. Her 2017 solo exhibition, Talismanic, explores the idea of shields, or protective objects, seen to act as talismans or charms which ward off evil, while simultaneously bringing good fortune. The works are impeccably detailed and provide the artist’s vision and knowledge. They encompass the values of motherhood and evoke the role of protector that one must assume over her children.
After completing her BFA in Painting from The Cooper Union in New York in 1992, Catherine Colangelo returned to her native Houston to pursue her art practice. She received the Individual Artist Grant Fellowships from the Houston Arts Alliance in 2007 and 2011 and was a Hunting Prize finalist in 2010 and 2014. Colangelo was selected by Bill Arning, Director of the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, from over 1000 entrants to be included in New American Paintings, No. 102. She also appears in the latest West issue, No. 106, juried by Claire C. Carter, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. She has also appeared in Art in America, Glasstire, Houston Press, Art Houston Magazine, Visual Art Source, The Austin Chronicle and The Houston Chronicle. Catherine Colangelo’s impressive work is found in a number of significant international private and corporate collections, including the Four Seasons Hotel (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Fidelity Investments (Boston), and Sidley Austin LLP (Houston).
