It's 1966. The Vietnam War has become “Americanized” under Lyndon Johnson, who has escalated U.S. involvement, and Hung Nguyen, a North Vietnamese squadron leader, is found dying in a rice field. When Nguyen is brought to Dr. Samuel Axelrad in Phu Cat, the army surgeon makes the only choice he can: he amputates Nguyen’s arm and saves his life. So began their unlikely friendship, their reunion 46 years later making headlines as Axelrad returned to Vietnam to give Nguyen something back: the bones of his arm. Axelrad, a native Houstonian, will discuss his memoir Thursday, an inspirational tale of humanity in dehumanizing times. [Organizer's description:] Who:: Brazos Bookstore will host Vietnam War veteran, Houston doctor and author Samuel Axelrad, M.D. What: Dr. Samuel Axelrad is a Houston author, retired urologist and Vietnam War veteran who recently published a memoir titled Peaceful Bones. Dr. Axelrad’s memoir illustrates his time in Vietnam as an army surgeon during the Vietnam war where he finds himself helping not only American soldiers but hundreds of Vietnamese citizens both wounded and ill. Peaceful Bones is about one special patient named Hung Nguyen aka "Charlie" who becomes an unlikely friend on the battlefield. Dr. Axelrad saves Charlie’s life, forging a bond that crosses cultural and enemy lines. Their reunion, 46 years after losing touch in 1967, was a moving and inspiring moment that made history around the world. Peaceful Bones is Dr. Axelrad’s stories of the war, his life, and the uncanny "coincidences" that brought him and Charlie together twice in one lifetime over several decades and thousands of miles. Dr. Axelrad’s son, Chris, and Rabbi Ranon Teller co-authored the memoir. Peaceful Bones will be available for purchase at Brazos Bookstore for the month of July. To order a copy before the book signing event, please visit Amazon.com. Why: A portion of the book’s proceeds benefit Texas for Heroes, an organization that sponsors retreats for U.S. veterans, and Hoa Binh Peace Village, which supports children in Vietnam affected by Agent Orange. Experience the story of an inspirational friendship between two enemy soldiers. Their reunion over four decades later was featured internationally on Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, BBC, Fox News, CBS News and many more.
