Local Teens Compete in Coveted Slam Poetry Competition
for a Spot on the 2017 Meta-Four Houston Team
The Space City Slam Series is the largest youth poetry slam competition in Texas. Presented by Writers in the Schools, the slam consists of two semi-final rounds and a Grand Slam at Discovery Green.
During the competition, 12 Houston area-poets, rappers, and writers ages 13-19 will have the opportunity to perform in front of guest judges with the hopes of being chosen as members of the 2017 Houston Meta-Four team.
This free event will feature a guest judging panel including community leaders such as Houston First Daughter, Ashley Turner, HISD Board Member, Anne Sung, and DJs from 97.9 The Box.
Since January, local teens have competed in five preliminary rounds for a chance to win a spot on the Meta-Four Houston slam poetry team. The winning students will go on to compete in the Brave New Voices competition in the San Francisco Bay Area in July 2017.
The final 6 winners will become the Meta-Four Houston team, representing Houston at Brave New Voices, the largest youth poetry slam in the world. Past team members have gone on to receive college scholarships and internships, perform on TEDx, and meet U. S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera.
