13th Annual Art on the Avenue

Winter Street’s about to be inundated with work by 275 Texas artists

BY BLAKE WHITAKER

13th Annual Art on the Avenue

Indecisive types, be warned: The array of art going up for auction at the 13th Annual Art on the Avenue benefit will not be conducive to easy choices. More than 275 Texas artists will have work available at Winter Street Studios for patrons to bid on in a silent auction. (There'll be an option to purchase pieces outright, like eBay's "Buy it now" function, but much less likely to induce regret.) In addition to the art, travel packages, local restaurant gift certificates and jewelry will also be on the block. That's in addition to a raffle for an original 1938 lithograph by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky.

Part of the proceeds go to the host, Avenue Community Development Center, a nonprofit dedicated to developing affordable housing and economic opportunities in the Heights/Near Northside area. "It's a good way for people to learn about what Avenue does, and also showcase a lot of different artists," says Lizbeth Mejia, assistant director of Avenue CDC. "[The atmosphere] is fun, very eclecticÉIt's very socialÉIt's just a fun night." There's a preview party 6 to 9 p.m. on November 12 during which attendees will have an early shot at buying the art, and Two Star Symphony and Puppet Pizzazz will entertain. The auction takes place 6 to 10 p.m. November 14. 2101 Winter Street. For information, call 713-864-8099 or visit www.avenuecdc.org. $20 to $100.
