“Farouk Hosny: The Energy of Abstraction”

An Egyptian artist paints over politics

BY JULIA RAMEY

“Farouk Hosny: The Energy of Abstraction”

Farouk Hosny has impressively managed to wield his artistic prowess both as a painter and a politician. His work has been shown all over the world, and he’s created many new pieces exclusively for his current exhibition, “Farouk Hosny: The Energy of Abstraction,” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In his official function as Egypt’s Minister of Culture, Hosny’s established an opera house, theaters and galleries; in 2006 he created a kerfuffle after calling the hijab a “step back” for Egyptian women. But this exhibit is all about his abstract, angular forms, bold use of color and homage to the landscapes of his native land, not politics. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 12:15 to 7 p.m. Sundays. Through September 1. 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. $7.
