"Happyville"

Perry House's current exhibit is upbeat and optimistic

BY OLIVIA FLORES ALVAREZ

Houston artist Perry House, considered one of the city's early pioneers of abstraction, has a new exhibit at Nau-haus Art Space, "Happyville." House is described in press materials as an artist who "strips away decoration, narrative, sex, politics and even perspective, while at the same time evoking the passage of time, weight [and] depth..." "Happyville" may be more cheerful than some of House's previous work. The series includes brightly colored paintings of oddly shaped houses and street grids. One painting shows a yellow house with an inviting blue swimming pool surrounded by a patterned tile patio, all set against a red background. The house, although it seems to be complete at first glance, is actually lacking parts of a wall and fence. The missing pieces are floating in the pool or drifting away in the air. Noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Through November 22. 223 East 11th Street. For information, visit www.nau-haus.com. Free.
