Cooking Girl, in the former Akamaru space in the Montrose, offers classic Chinese dishes that feature that tongue-tingling sensation, the Sichuan peppercorn. Fortunately, for the less adventurous — or for those who aren’t interested in their palate eventually going numb — there’s a milder American-Chinese selection, too. That said, it’s the Sichuan dishes that are much more full of flavor. The silky, spicy tofu is divine, as is the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” a rendition of the classic “Couples Lung Slices” that’s actually made with beef and ox tongue. Oddly, the hot herbal teas are served in glasses, not cups, and a sip tends to bring the plant matter along for the ride. Sometimes that’s pleasant; sometimes not. Fortunately, BYOB here is only $4.99 for a bottle of wine or 99 cents for a beer. The service is congenial, helpful and definitely of the kind that makes diners feel they’ve truly landed in a family restaurant.
