Sterling House was the home of former Texas governor Ross Sterling (and his extended family). Houston bar owner Amir Ansari bought the property in 2009 and has restored and renovated the home, opening Sterling House on August 15 of this year. The neighborhood bar and restaurant offers not-so-typical gastropub fare and an impressive list of crafted cocktails. The Wednesday steak night deal includes a 14-ounce rib eye, salad, side and draft beer. Order the triple-cooked fries and crispy chickpeas. House cocktails are superb. There are theme nights daily, including Vintage Mondays for Industry Appreciation and half-off wine, Champagne, frosé and Prosecco on Thursday. The outdoor patio is a great place to gather with friends to watch games on two large-screen televisions, play a game of cornhole or hang out with your pup. Sterling House needs to improve in flavor and execution, but the bar staff is attentive and service is good.
