After serving as executive chef at two critically acclaimed restaurants that ultimately failed, suffering a stroke and beating cancer, chef David Guerrero is back with Andes Cafe, an ode to his Ecuadorian heritage and the South American countries through which the Andes Mountain range runs. The menu of this East End restaurant is as diverse as the cultures that populate the region: meat cooked on a hot grill; raw seafood cured in lime juice; Chinese-style fried rice with shrimp; Cuban sandwiches on French bread; and colorful spices and sauces galore. Though the meat can be tough and sinewy (hey, it's authentic!), the seafood dishes and small appetizer plates shine due to the attention to detail in the complex sauces and wonderful smoky flavor of the grilled items.
