What Brooks Family BBQ lacks in decor and sophistication, it more than makes up for in incredible barbecue and one of the most welcoming family environments in town. The small joint is run by the Brooks family, whose Houston roots go back to the 1970s, when father Harlon moved here from Nacogdoches and opened Harlon's BBQ. Harlon's restaurant is no longer around, but in December 2013, his son, Marlon, opened his own barbecue joint with help from his wife and sister. Crowds have yet to discover the unassuming restaurant across Scott Street from UH, but once they taste the smoky brisket, sweet and spicy glazed salmon, or fall-off-the-bone ribs, Brooks Family BBQ is sure to be a Houston hot spot. Even better than the meat, though, is the family themselves, who welcome every diner like a long-lost relative they're delighted to serve.
