Behind Cafe Brussels is Catherine Duwez, who once operated Cafe Montrose and the Broken Spoke, both of which were fine Belgian restaurants. But with Cafe Brussels, something that made those two places so authentic and delicious seems to be missing. The space is charming enough, but the service is lackluster and the food is definitely not what it could be. Duwez clearly knows how to run a restaurant and how to make good food, but something is lost between conception and execution, even in simple dishes like a croque madame or a ground beef steak. If you reminisce longingly about the moules marinieres and frites from Cafe Montrose, though, these ones are pretty similar and equally delicious. Cafe Brussels also has the largest selection of Belgian beer in Houston, which helps any subpar dishes go down a little more smoothly.
