Grace's is the latest offering from Johnny Carrabba, owner of Carrabba's and Mia's, both just a short walk away from Grace's. It's named after his maternal grandmother, Grace Mandola, whose excellent cooking and passion for food launched the careers of some of Houston's most influential restaurateurs including her sons Vincent, Damian and Tony Mandola. This isn't the Italian food Carrabba's devotees are used to, though. It's an amalgamation of food from various cultures, in an ode to Houston's diversity and Grace's kitchen, which embraced the local melting pot of cuisines. There's only one pasta dish on the menu, and it's a shame because Carrabba does pasta well. Cajun dishes like gumbo and fried oysters are also winners, but the Asian food falls a little flat. The intended clientele is older and moneyed, so be prepared to drop some dough at Grace's. Grace herself may have had simple tastes, but the River Oaks crowd does not.
