Hughie's succeeds because it fills a niche that was missing in the Timbergrove neighborhood, not because the food will knock your socks off. It's standard Vietnamese and standard Southern in one charming, craft beer-filled location. If that combination seems incongruous, just think of it as a representation of Houston itself on a smaller scale. There's classic Texan chicken-fried steak right next to Vietnamese shaking beef and some of the biggest banh mi sandwiches in town. The craft beer selection is staggering, thanks in part to the owners' devotion to adding anything a customer requests, and the patio is a great spot to down a few too many pints. Service is painfully slow during busy dinner hours, but the beer is cold and the food is fresh. Hughie's isn't the best option for Southern or Vietnamese food in this big city, but it's fresh and solid. Oh, and did we mention the beer?
