This chic new cocktail bar is from self-taught bartender extraordinaire Alba Huerta, formerly of Anvil Bar & Refuge and the Pastry War. She told us she created Julep as a place that reflects the American South, its people, their tastes, and their traditions. The bar takes its name from the iconic centuries-old mixed cocktail the mint julep, which originated in the South and was a symbol of wealth and excess, as the mandatory chipped ice was quite expensive in days of old. Here, the Mint Julep consists of Four Roses and Old Granddad 100 bourbons, fresh mint, turbinado and powdered sugar, served in a silver cup, with lots of ice. Rock & Rye, Spiced, and Sparkling Juleps are also available, and shiny to-go julep cups are available for a fee. In addition to the variety of juleps, Huerta has also created a number of Southern house cocktails like the Cherry Bounce Sour and Cider & Milk Punch, as well as pre-prohibition Southern-style drinks including the Crescent City and Boulevardier. In addition to the cocktails, a fine selection of wines, spirits and craft beers is available. The seafood sold here – oysters, bay scallops, clams, lobsters, prawns, and caviar – also reflects old Southern wealth and excess. Not in the mood for seafood? Try the pickled quail eggs or rabbit rillette pantry jars with a friend instead.
