Location Description:

Ice houses are an institution of the Texas landscape, and Sheffield’s has been holding court over its spot on Telephone road ever since it was first constructed in 1942. “In the beginning it was just beer, ice, and milk. The old man always wore a white apron,” declared a long-rooted customer. The regulars here have been coming for decades, and for good reason: the beers are frigid, and cheaper than dirt. Hints of modernity have crept in – the old jukebox finally gave way to an Internet machine, and there are plenty of flat-screen televisions for game-watching, but for the most part Sheffield’s remains the same. As with any proper ice house, there’s often a crock pot of something delicious in the back, and the many roll-top doors are up in sunny weather to give the place an open-air feel. It’s easy to see why Sheffield’s is a former “Best of Houston” winner for Best Icehouse.
