Charlie Robison

For a while there, Houston-born Charlie Robison was everybody's favorite country-music bad boy, the guy who would say anything at any time, the kind of guy the Nashville suits fear. Along the way, he married and had children, and for a long period music seemed to take a back seat to his ranch in Bandera and his private life. But after a four-year recording hiatus, in 2009 Robison responded to some tough times in his life with his best album in a long while. Beautiful Day is part melancholy, part regret, part angry rock-and-roller. Yet while some describe it as Robison's "divorce album," overall the record is more about picking yourself up out of the dirt, getting back on the horse that threw you and moving forward than about bitterness and hurt. Certainly his divorce from Dixie Chick Emily Erwin resonates throughout the album, no more so than on wicked rocker "Yellow Blues": "Maybe 'cause you're yellow / Maybe that's the reason that I've got the blues." Besides the Beautiful Day songs, it's a safe bet Robison will throw in rowdy old favorites like "Bar Light" and one of Texas's favorite sing-alongs, "My Hometown."
