Check out either his new album, Out of the Blue, or the video of a recent live performance at Nashville's Exit/In, and it is immediately obvious that Clay McClinton is not the problem child who revolted against Dad. He may not have the resources yet to afford horn sections and brilliant keyboardists in his road band like the old man does, but Clay McClinton does all right with his little four-piece Nashville combo. Even a casual listen makes it readily apparent that the younger McClinton has absorbed Dad's phrasings and attitudes, and that the family genes must have been encoded at some smoky roadhouse by a honky-tonk roughneck.
