Houston instrumental rock quartet Co-Pilot describes its sound as "the soundtrack for an epic battle," and we have to agree. The band, around in name since 2001 but with this lineup only active since 2005, has a woozy, Explosions in the Sky-type sound. Layering effects pedals — sometimes as many as five, by their count — onto dreamy guitar lines and intricate drumming, Co-Pilot could very much be a mixtape for your next intergalactic scrap. It's amazing music for a dark drive home or an early morning meander, alternating between heavy and easy. This past summer the band toured the East Coast and Great White North, and is currently making plans to begin recording a new EP sometime in January. After that, the band plans on making short Midwest jaunts, and looks forward to "staying within 1,000 miles of home."
