Dave Matthews Band's Seven Best Covers
Tonight the Dave Matthews Band hits the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion with Austin's Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears as their supporting act. Now into their second decade of massive touring schedules, the DMB is now a cash machine on wheels - a sort of cleaner and less hairy Grateful Dead, or at least a more corporatized Phish.
Aside from jamming on 14-minute versions of some of their biggest songs, the band also has a penchant for covers. Early on, the band's choices were the expected takes on Bob Dylan ("All Along The Watchtower") and the Beatles ("You Won't See Me").
As time went on, they started to infuse more funk and country into their cover palette and were soon doing Johnny Cash and the Meters. There is a quick snippet of Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" on YouTube as well.
Rocks Off found the best seven covers the DMB has done; we have to say that their cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" is pretty stellar. It's not so surprising since Gabriel was a huge influence on the young Matthews in South Africa.
