We get the same feeling listening to South African import Die Antwoord's debut album $O$ that we got spinning the first M.I.A album way back in 2005, or even The Streets and Dizzee Rascal before that. The States may have created hip-hop, but it's quickly being outsourced in new and inventive ways that we would have never imagined. The duo of Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er, plus DJ Hi-Tek, began making waves on this side of the world at the end of 2009 with their "Zef" style, fusing elements of their own Afrikaans culture and what we would call "white trash beautiful" here in the U.S. Their recent video for "Evil Boy" was easily one of the most hilarious, disturbing and innovative things we have seen in 2010, featuring enough phalluses and gangster imagery to sate us until next summer, or the next Lady Gaga video. No telling if we will be talking about Die Antwoord (translation: the answer) this time next year, but for now they're putting on a helluva show.
