Digable Planets, Camp Lo
Since we're officially living in the era of "Mr. Hit Dat Hoe," mourning hip-hop appears to be an increasingly growing practice. (We shed a tear or two when we first heard that song.) Thankfully, true hip-hop heads can take in an evening of refreshing, old-school beats and rhymes when Digable Planets and Camp Lo team up for a show this week. You can't get more throwback than these two. The Planets duo of Butterfly and Doodlebug (sorry, guys – the fetching Ladybug Mecca won't be around) is still one of the most beguiling, jazzified, alt-hip-hop groups to come out of the Clinton era, while Camp Lo partners Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede continue to pick up listeners with the pimpalicious grooves and wordplay they came on the scene with in the mid-'90s. And don't forget: Planets will be backed by the TSU Jazz Ensemble, so not only will it be a night of authentic hip-hop, but a night of authentic music.
