Metal supergroups don't get too much heavier or better pedigreed than New Orleans's Down, made up of former Pantera members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan, Crowbar's Kirk Windstein, and Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod. Over 20 years together (but only three albums), the band has become a live and studio force to be reckoned with, even if their output isn't as prolific as one would wish. Down Frankensteins all of the members' influences and signature sounds together to make something all its own, but not too far from their respective groups — Sabbath, blues, bluegrass, thrash, smoke and booze all thrown in the thresher. Each of that trilogy of albums — NOLA, A Bustle In Your Hedgerow and Over the Under — is an alternately blistering and mellow journey into the collective talents of some of the best metal minds of the past two decades.
