Brooklyn's Fang Island somehow ably marries the crunch of techy indie-metal groups like the Fucking Champs and Jeff the Brotherhood with the twee-pop of Local Natives; the latter sound is a good way to reel in the babes. That's the impression we got after spinning Fang's latest, Major, released late last month. We're still torn over which side they do better, because "Seek It Out" starts out like a Mastodon raver and goes straight into Surfer Blood territory within seconds. Many writers believe this makes the band "weirdos," but nothing here seems strange to our ears, as tracks like "Dooney Rock" just up our enthusiasm about them. It's that "fearless happy shredding," as one blog called it, that is making Major seem destined for many a 2012 best-of list.
