Girls Rock Camp Houston End of Camp Showcase
Normally we would never recommend another show happening up against our own Houston Press Music Awards showcase (see insert), but we're happy to make an exception here. Since 2010, Girls Rock Camp Houston — the independent local arm of the nationwide Girls Rock Camp Alliance — has brought area girls ages eight to 18 to Rice University's Student Media Center, where they learn a lot more than just how to play a G chord. Coached by local musicians, the girls split off into groups and attend self-esteem seminars (for example) between rehearsing a handful of songs for a week. "People recognize that there is a need for a self-empowerment camp for young girls," GRCH Executive Director Anna Garza told our Rocks Off blog last year. Indeed, this year's enrollment has doubled to more than 70 campers, and Sunday's end-of-camp showcase (all ages, of course) will introduce Houston to its next generation of HPMA nominees.
