High on Fire
De Vermis Mysteriis is the name of High on Fire's upcoming album, the band's sixth studio effort, and it seems to be helping continue their almost-militant assault on your hearing. First single "Fertile Green" is a worthy preview of the brutally burly things to come, thanks to the modern architect of loud, producer and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. The ten-track Mysteriis hits the street April 6, and will no doubt be lauded as one of 2012's great metal releases. The Oakland, California, trio first made heads turn with 2000's The Art of Self Defense, marrying the green-thumb mysticism of lead singer Matt Pike's previous band Sleep with the mammoth influence of proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer. They stepped up their own game on 2005's Blessed Black Wings, which became one of the best-reviewed metal records of that decade after extensive touring and love from all the most important bearded tastemakers. After Thursday, HOF will return to Houston in July on Rockstar Energy Drink's Mayhem Festival alongside Slayer, Slipknot and Anthrax.
