Honky-Tonk Heaven Returns To Houston

It may be Wetback Wednesday at some bar in Huntsville, but in H-Town the first Wednesday of every month has become Honky Tonk Wednesday, when the lineup for those interested in gettin' their tonk on is stout as a garlic milkshake.

Boot heels will be dragged, belt buckles will be polished, Lone Star will be consumed. There probably isn't a single town on the planet with more top quality honky-tonk music on one night - let alone a Wednesday night! Here's a brief rundown.

Robert Ellis & The Boys: Whiskey Wednesdays at the newly refurbed Fitzgerald's. From all reports, last week's debut since moving from Mango's was jammed. Ellis & the Boys took home top country band honors in this year's Press voting. 10 p.m. until....

Nick Gaitan & the Umbrella Man: Nick Gaitan (Press Entertainer of the Year) and Roberto Rodriguez just keep grinding out the Gulf Coast dance music at the Continental Club. Fuel up at the brand-new Natachee's Supper & Punch just up the block beforehand. 8 p.m. until....

Mike Stinson: Stinson continues his regular first Wednesday of the month residency at Under the Volcano. Stinson took Best Song honors in this year's Press voting with "Got No One To Drink With Anymore." 7-10 p.m.

4. Mitch Jacobs: The perennial roadhouse favorite plays a stripped-down three-piece show at the Hideaway on Dunvale every Wednesday, and always has interesting guests. 8-11 p.m.

5. Country Jim Sloan: Sloan and his band of honky tonk aces - Richard Wolfe (Fiddlin' Frenchie Burke) on guitar, Pete Burke (Gene Watson) on bass, Dan Kirby (Moe Bandy) on steel - will do a 45-minute set at Blanco's before turning the stage over to anyone who wants to get up and do it. 8:00 p.m. until....

6. Honky-tonk karaoke at Aubrey's: 8 p.m. until...

One suggestion: if you're going to try to cover a bunch of these, may we suggest a cab, 'cause you know there's gonna be drinkin' and two-steppin' involved in your journey.
