When he's not advocating fair trade or just generally getting under the University of Houston administration's skin, controversial social activist Tim O'Brien's passions run equally hot toward music. O'Brien recently finished his U of H dissertation on Lightnin' Hopkins and has helped organize local benefits for ailing musicians Peter Case and Alejandro Escovedo. Now that O'Brien, a regular contributor to the Houston Press's music section in 2002 and 2003, is himself battling Stage 4 melanoma (see "O'Brien's Song" by John Nova Lomax, December 10, 2009), his friends are returning the favor with this benefit at the Mink that doubles as a one-night Houston punk history lesson. Backed by the Texas Biscuit Bombs — the surviving bandmates of late Lone Star punk legend Randy "Biscuit" Turner — members of Party Owls, Homopolice, Born Liars, London Girl, Zipperneck, Anarchitex and more will shuffle on and off stage. Furthermore, Houston's '80s answer to the Slits, the MyDolls, will play a full set, and Bob Weber — drummer for arguably the original Bayou City punk rockers, Really Red — will break out RR songs like "Prostitution" and "I Refuse to Sing" for the first time in decades. Proceeds from the door and the "punk garage sale" on the patio go straight to O'Brien.
