HPMA Showcase Spotlight: DJ Sun, "Throw This Down Just After the BBQ..."
In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.

What are you nominated for? I am nominated for Best DJ, but will be presenting my full band: DJ SUN & Resolution.
Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play. Tim Ruiz, bass & keyboards; Dominick Hawkins, drums; Leah Alvarez, vocals; Martin Perna, flute.
Describe yourself in four to seven words. "Throw this down just after the BBQ..." (Daryl Wright, review of One Hundred on PopMatters.com)
Who is your single biggest musical influence and why? Massive Attack because with a combination of electronically produced, live instrumentation, pertinent voices, a nod to hip-hop and reggae, and visual art, they were able to be relevant from 1991-2004.
What recordings (if any) do you have readily available? I released One Hundred, which is internationally distributed through INGrooves. Physical copies are available at Cactus, Sound Exchange, Heights Vinyl, etc.
Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for? Every year, since about 1997, winning it from 1999-2005, and again in 2009. For Best DJ.
Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston? I play regularly at The Flat, Onion Creek, the MFAH, and on KPFT (Soular Grooves, Saturdays 9-midnight). As DJ SUN & Resolution, we perform mostly at festivals, having played SXSW and FPSF.
What is the next step for you? I am working on two projects: one to be released in the next few months and the other, a follow-up to One Hundred.
Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..." ...diverse.
