Anyone who has ever been to a show at the Continental Club is likely familiar with barbecue guru Adam Fisher. Fisher and wife Lena have been serving simple, scrumptious brisket and sausage sandwiches for $5 almost as long as the club has been there. They also serve outside The Big Easy on Kirby several nights a week.
Fisher was rushed to the emergency room in early June and ended up with a long stay in intensive care. In fact, rumors of his passing swept across Facebook before someone found out the truth of the matter.
According to Big Easy proprietor Tom McLendon, he received word that Fisher had died. But later that evening, McLendon was called to the phone and, to his surprise, Fisher was on the phone telling him, "Don't give up on me, I ain't dead yet."
What actually caused Fisher's rush to the hospital was a piece of mesh from a previous hernia operation coming loose. The debris wrapped around a section of Fisher's intestine and began to restrict movement.

But after a quick surgery, which resulted in 12 inches of intestine being removed, Fisher went on the mend, although his recuperation has been slow.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, The Big Easy will open its doors for an afternoon of music, community, sharing -- and of course -- barbecue. Bands include Luther and the Healers, Mojofromopolis, John McVey and the Stumble, Bon Ton Mickey, Leonard "Lowdown" Brown, and a special appearance by the dean of the scene, Texas Johnny Brown. There should be some smokin' jams as these outfits mingle throughout the afternoon.
Fisher has long been one of those gentle giants on the scene. For those who like great music and great barbecue, this should be one fine Sunday to celebrate one cool cat.
