Joseph Murrail Jackson Memorials
Local drummer/percussionist/vibist Joe Jackson died suddenly behind his drum kit on January 12. Jackson was known for the band the Buddhacrush, as well as for his work in the JMJ Trio and in the Afro-Cuban Ensemble. Although he was apparently in good health and only 34 years old, the cause of death was a heart attack. Jackson leaves behind two daughters, and the Houston music community is rallying to give the youngsters a trust fund. There will be a remembrance party at Last Concert Cafe, 1403 Nance, on Friday, January 18, at 7 p.m., and a huge benefit at the Mercury Room, 1008 Prairie, on Sunday, January 20. Jeff Boortz kicks off the benefit at 4 p.m., followed by the Pander Band, Surface, the Uprights, the High Rollers, the Shape Shifters and La Raza Connection. Also, the Buddhacrush plans to play its scheduled Saturday, January 19, gig at Ovations, 2536-B Times Boulevard, with a replacement drummer. Proceeds will be donated to Jackson's widow and children.
