About two weeks ago, local indie-folk quartet listenlisten made the up-and-comer "Hype Monitor" section of — the first time a local band landed a notice in a major music publication since Spin reviewed the Fatal Flying Guilloteens' Quantum Fucking a couple years back. The Hype Monitor thinks listenlisten's debut full-length, next month's Hymns from Rhodesia, is "the kind of music cowboys might hear in the distance as they stumble to their doom." Apparently, it's impossible for non-Texans to write about any band from Texas without mentioning cowboys; to us, Rhodesia recalls the unsettling funhouse folk that mask-clad San Marcos misfits the Attic Ted did so well earlier this decade. Striking while the movable type is hot, listenlisten plays a pair of weekend sendoff shows with good buddy (and fellow artist to watch) Robert Ellis before embarking on its own tour to Brooklyn and back. Friday's show at Washington Corridor sippin' spot Block 7 is free; Saturday's Indie Houston house party is $5, but that's just a down payment on a bottomless beer cup.
