Rocks Off: When and where was your first gig in Houston, and how did it go?
David G. Cortes: My first gig in Houston was in a bbq party, from one of the band members place of work (saturday afternoon) in april 2008.. It went ok, but that day I decided to quit that band I was playing with, they had so many mistakes during the show and they had zero stage prescence...
RO: What Houston-area venues do you play most often?
DGC: With the last two bands I was playing with, we played all over, we did from wine bars to House of Blues. Scout Bar and the Concert Pub (since they wanted cover bands) are the nice places I can think of that I have never played at...
RO: How often do you play in the area?
DGC: With the last two bands we were constantly performing, on average three-four times a month.
RO: Describe your sound in eight words or less.
RO: How did you come up with your name?
Being born in Mexico, we all use our two last names (father's last name/mother 's last name) in our daily name. Having also two first names, I decided to use my second first name, the first letter of my first last name and my second last name as my last name. Hence, David G.Cortes.
RO: Where would you like yourself or your band to be in one year? Ten years? Forty?
DGC: In one year, I would like to finish my double LP (20 songs) titled Time Away and be able to have as many of my songs in as many radio stations as possible. Having more than 250,000 hits on my videos would be nice.
In ten years, being able to be a headliner, have played all major festivals, tour the world. In 40 years... probably dead...
RO: What is one thing you'd like to do (as a musician) before you pack it in?
DGC: Be able to write and record as many songs/lyrics as possible... So my catalog can be an everlasting/immortal as life lets me...
David G. Cortes plays 6 p.m. Sunday, August 5 at the House of Blues Crossroads Stage (restaurant).
