Rocks Off reached out to the artists playing this year's Houston Press Music Awards showcase Sunday, August 5, and asked them to introduce themselves. Here's what they sent back.
Rocks Off: When and where was your first gig in Houston, and how did it go?
Nathan Quick: My 1st gig was at Fitzgerald's in early 2007, I was still in high school. The gig was good, and I had a descent turn out. It was on a Sunday. Back in those days you had to play on a Sunday your first time and bring a minimum number of people to see you before you could play on a Friday or Saturday.
RO: What Houston-area venues do you play most often?
NQ: I play at AvantGarden a lot, Fitzgerald's once in a while, the [Bronze] Peacock Room at House of Blues, and various bars downtown and in Rice Village.
RO: How often do you play in the area?
NQ: I play at least twice a week, whether it be a gig or a show, I'm playing somewhere.
RO: Describe your sound in eight words or less.
NQ: Intricate lyrics, solid melodies and tasteful lead guitar.
RO: How did you come up with your name?
NQ: My name is easy, because it's my name.
RO: Where would you like yourself or your band to be in one year? Ten years? Forty?
NQ: I'd like to be playing bigger shows and festivals across the U.S. I'd like to keep growing as a musician and a songwriter. I'd like to experience a long tour on the road. I'd like to establish a following in multiple cities. I'd like to co-write a song with Ryan Bingham or Ryan Adams.
I'd like more time and freedom to be able to work on my music in the recording studio and more frequently. I'd like to have something produced by T-Bone Burnett. I'd like to tour Europe.
I want my music to stick with people, even when I'm not here to play it anymore, hopefully a long time from now.
RO: What is one thing you'd like to do (as a musician) before you pack it in?
NQ: I'd like to get an investor of some sort to help me put out an incredible record I want to make, and go on a tour with a musician I really enjoy and respect.
