Though renowned among fans of bizarro punk rock in the West, Melt Banana is still somewhat unknown in its home of Tokyo, where J-pop still reigns supreme. Early in their career, the members of Melt Banana heard the No New York compilation, and it sparked their collective interest in taking a major departure from more conventional music. Nineteen years, numerous releases, high-profile collaborations and multiple tours later, Melt Banana has firmly established itself as a respected cult band in its own right. Of late, Melt Banana has opened its shows with a set of eruptive electronic noise referred to as "Melt Banana Lite." Jarring and spastically energetic to the point of being frighteningly intense, even the "Lite" version of the band makes most other punk and noise seem tame by comparison.
