It's not unexpectedly declassified CIA documents, but information about Arcade Fire's upcoming album might be the music world's equivalent.

Rumors have been swirling around the imminent follow-up to the partially Woodlands-spawned band's Grammy-winning 2010 LP The Suburbs for weeks, and Arcade Fire recently posted a teaser video cryptically slugged "9/9/9" on their Web site. Wednesday night the band played some of the new stuff at a club in their sometime hometown of Montreal. According to Consequence of Sound (via Montreal's The Main), the music was "unexpectedly dance-oriented, due to the upbeat rhythms of conga drums and electronic flourishes alongside their most poppy sounds."

Accordingly, it was also described as "contemporary" relative to Arcade Fire's rather grave previous work. So we shall see.

Anyway, a big piece of puzzle surrounding the new album dropped right into Cactus Music's lap Thursday night, when word got around that, starting at 9 p.m. Monday, the Shepherd Plaza store will be the exclusive outlet to buy the band's new 12" single, "Reflektor." Conveniently, it will will host a "Reflektor" listening party at the same time. Cactus confirmed the news about an hour ago via Twitter.

Cactus had originally planned to make the announcement 12 hours previously, at 9 a.m. Monday, but you know how it is these days. Rocks Off heard something might be up Wednesday night and queried Cactus GM Quinn Bishop first thing this morning. Here's the official text, via his email.

There is nary a mention of the new album, or when it might be released, even on the band's page on the Web site for Arcade Fire's label, Merge Records. But all this cloak and dagger stuff is getting us excited.
