The Pulitzer Prize winners were announced yesterday and free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman won the Music Pulitzer for his 2006 release Sound Grammar (the first ever Pulitzer win for a jazz album). John Coltrane was given a Pulitzer Special Citation "for his masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship, and iconic centrality to the history of jazz."
