Rocks Off is proud to announce that we have signed on Girl In a Coma as our special guest for the Houston Press Music Awards showcase, which is now less than two weeks away.
The San Antonio trio is no stranger to these parts, mostly because it seems like they're here all the time. In the past year or two, GIAC has played Fitzgerald's, House of Blues, Discovery Green and Cactus Music, and that's just what we can think of offhand. They'll be playing at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, August 4, after all the other HPMA showcasers have finished and everyone is (hopefully) all crowded into House of Blues' Music Hall.
Girl In a Coma might seem a little young to have put out four albums already, but that's because front woman Phanie Diaz and Jenn Alva started their band nearly a decade ago and recruited Nina Diaz (Phanie's little sister) to sing lead when she was all of 13. The threesome cranks out a hair-raising blend of '90s riot-grrrl punk, Texas roots and a certain obsession with the Smiths' jangly alt-pop that more often than not leaves their audiences gasping for more.
They even have a nice little warmup gig lined up: later this week, GIAC will be opening for their boss, Joan Jett, at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, Calif. Jett signed the Texans to her Blackheart Records a few years ago; their fourth album for the label, Exits & All the Rest, came out in late 2012 and has recently been getting some radio play for the shimmering single "Smart." You also might have heard them in Robert Rodriguez' bodacious 2011 border B-movie Machete.
Tickets for the showcase are still only a ridiculous $10; you can buy them at HPMusicAwards.com. Also watch @hprocksoff for daily giveaways, and until midnight Tuesday, we're offering two for one showcase tickets as part of the Houston Press VOICE Daily Deal.
So to sum up, that's fortysomething of Houston's top acts -- see the schedule here -- and now Girl In a Coma for five bucks. Can't beat that with a stick.
