Los Lonely Boys House of Blues December 22, 2012
In the very Texan tradition of "rocking the fuck out!", Los Lonely Boys spent their last show of 2012 at House of Blues this past Saturday. The trio of brothers brought with them the perfect mix of sweet love songs, intense rock jams, and Christmas carols -- with a Texican twist, of course.
They began with "Señorita," a Spanglish blues-rock ode to the lovely Latin ladies that we so often run into here in Texas. They followed with "Hollywood," a slower but equally heartfelt anthem about chasing your dreams.
Bassist brother JoJo Garza took advantage of the mike to spread some holiday cheer. "This is a beautiful time of year" he said. "We need to spread more love in this world because there are lots of crazy stuff going on, and we're the only ones that can change that."
The mood swung into a funky breakdown soon after, with covers of James Brown and Michael Jackson inspiring the crowd to cheer and get on the good foot.
"Do y'all feel good, Houston?" asked lead singer and master guitarist Henry. "I mean, I know y'all look good, but do y'all feel GOOD!?" Cheers, of course. People love to be complimented.
The energy of the band translated into the crowd, with both jumping and dancing throughout the night. Henry and Jojo did the duckwalk while at the same time pushing out the hardest guitar and bass jam-solos I've heard in a very long time.
Next up was the highlight of the night: Texican covers of "Feliz Navidad" and "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" made a nice night into a beautiful one. They also offered us an original Christmas song called "She'll Be My Everything For Christmas," which I will forever add to my Christmas Spotify Playlist.
Before ending the night with "Heaven," the band invited a whole crew of young kids (family members I suppose) to dance and shake it onstage. When I tell you it was the cutest thing I've ever seen, you best believe it. They shook what their mama gave them!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good Texican night!
Personal Bias: I listed LLB in my list of the Top Texas Latino Albums earlier this month.
The Crowd: Mexican, Texican, Chicano, and Lowriders. All having fun and rocking out.
Overheard In The Crowd: "This is my first time here at House of Blues, and my first time seeing Los Lonely Boys live. It's going down tonight, baby!"
Random Notebook Dump: Merry Christmas and a Feliz Año Nuevo everyone!
