If the Civil Wars are too dear and twee for you, and She & Him just too indie, may we suggest Charleston, South Carolina, duo Shovels & Rope? The husband-and-wife team of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent come preloaded with an endorsement by Hayes Carll, who took them out on the road sporadically in 2011, including December's stellar House of Blues show with Houston's Robert Ellis. The duo was easily one of our most treasured finds of the past year, and their opening slots converted other folks across the country within just a few songs. Sharing guitar and drum duties, ping-ponging seamlessly, Shovels & Rope should have an easy time satisfying your classic-country-loving heart. Hearst's Loretta-via-Holly-Golightly voice is a tattered, sugary thing to behold next to Trent's back-porch holler, and the band is currently readying a new album for release this year.
