Did you know Bruce Springsteen mentions bygone downtown venue Liberty Hall in his song "This Hard Land"? Of course you did, because Rocks Off is contractually obligated to mention it every time we post something about The Boss.
So now that's out of the way, here's something else Houston-related Springsteen fans can look forward to: Besides 21 previously unreleased songs Backstreets.com announced November's epic six-disc reissue - that's right, we said six - of Bruce's 1978 LP Darkness On the Edge of Town, which he calls his "samurai" record, includes a DVD of his December 12, 1978 concert at the Summit, Springsteen's first-ever Houston arena visit.
Springsteen also played the Sam Houston Coliseum that July. Here's what Mel Sharkskin told us about that show for Rocks Off's three-part retrospective on Springsteen in Houston last November:
I remember backstage after the Darkness tour show, I was going out the rear door (his backstage was never anything but business, so I was told, but I had to see since I had the pass, and my seats to the show were about as bad as they could be in the Coliseum. So there were all these fans at the rear loadout door and there was Bruce signing all this kid's bootleg albums, looking them over and saying, "Wow, you got some I never even saw!
Here is the set list from the Summit show, which appears to have lasted about eight hours, short by Springsteen standards.

Entitled The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story, the set is scheduled for release on November 16. Besides the remastered original album, two discs of unreleased songs, Summit DVD (referred to as "Houston Bootleg '78: House Cut"), it also includes a making-of documentary that will air on HBO October 7 and another DVD of Springsteen performing Darkness in its entirety solo last year at the Paramount Theater in good old Asbury Park, N.J.
Columbia Records will also release those 21 "new" songs, including the original recordings of "Fire" and "Because the Night" as a separate two-disc set simply titled The Promise. Got all that?
Brucespringsteen.net is currently previewing The Promise by streaming "Save My Love" and an excerpt from the documentary.
