T for Texas, T for T-Bird & the Breaks. Like their Austin neighbors Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, T-Bird & the Breaks bring a relentless hip-hop swagger to vintage funk and soul grooves. Obviously paying homage to their Texas R&B forefathers in the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Breaks debuted in early 2009 with a self-titled CD that recalled a huskier John Mellencamp doing his best to front James Brown's late-'60s band. Last year's T-Bird Is Good for You changed the game somewhat, with Mr. Bird revealing heretofore unknown MC abilities while other parts of the album chilled out in an almost liquefied dub-heavy environment. (That makes it a curious Gulf Coast companion to the Beastie Boys' Check Your Head.) Then another LP, Good So Bad, followed close on its heels late last year. Take it from a few typical T-Bird song titles: "I Gets My Boogie On," "Somebody Had a Drinking Problem Last Night," "Juju Baby" — this show looks like fun.
