A couple of years ago, word began circulating around Austin about a trio fronted by a lovely young lass — who turned out to be former Houstonian Lauren Larson, forcefully backed by bassist husband Greg and drummer Jeff Barrera — with vocals as sweet as her explosive guitar bursts were caustic. Well, Ume isn't a secret anymore. With songs that filter dreamy pop hooks and soothing shoegaze passages into Larson's tenacious waves of noise, its brand-new, all-too-brief Sunshower EP has already won the endorsement of Gang of Four's Dave Allen and influential Seattle radio station KEXP. The tastemaking elite may just be finding out, but those of us who saw them first always knew Ume had what it takes to go the distance.
