UPDATED (4:35 p.m.): The Mayor's Office of Special Events released a statement about the performance.

Meteorologists, farmers and other weather-watchers around here may know that Texas has again entered another official drought. But not Monday night when a sudden downpour put a damper on the City of Houston's official New Year's Eve celebration, headlined by disco kingpins KC & the Sunshine Band.

According to Team KC, it rained hard enough to force Discovery Green officials to pull the plug, even though the concert had been billed as rain or shine. It must have been a last-minute decision, because the anchors on the Channel 13 clip below were still expecting to put on their boogie shoes (even though Tom Koch had already called the event a "near-washout"). Mayor Annise Parker tweeted about it.

But the Sunshine crew posted this message Tuesday on KC's official Facebook page:

Happy New Year everyone.. To all those that came out last night to bring in the New Year with us in Houston, we are sorry and just as disappointed as you are that we were unable to perform. This is the first time we have ever been rained out.

It was not the discussion of KCSB to not perform but that of the venue as they were not willing to partake in the liability of any accidents happening onstage... Again, our deepest apologizes and Happy New Year !!! ~! Lala

Wednesday afternoon Susan Christian, Director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events, released this statement:

The storm's deluge hit at the absolute worst time for the 10:15 KC and the Sunshine Band performance. Unfortunately with standing water throughout the park, including the stage, the conditions were just not safe for a live performance.

However, the rain did not dampen the spectacular fireworks show and the DJs continued spinning and kept the party going until 12:30 a.m., allowing the crowd to ring in 2013 in proper style.

Hey, at least the Art Car Parade still happened too.

KC is a lifer, though, so surely he'll be back. He was just at the Arena Theatre in October, in fact. Rocks Off still had a nice conversation with him last week, which you can read here.
