A.J. McCarron's Hot Girlfriend Will Be Bikini Clad On A Reality Diving Show
The clock is ticking on Katherine Webb's 15 minutes of fame, and to say that she is striking while the iron is hot would be putting it mildly.
If you are asking "Who in the blue hell is Katherine Webb?"
then you don't read headlines of my stories very closely let's go back to Monday night, January 7, 2013. It's the BCS title game between Alabama and Notre Dame, late in the first quarter, and in between plays, the producers go to a crowd shot.
THIS crowd shot (see above).
So Webb is Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron's girlfriend. She is also the reigning Miss Alabama. If you're trying to guess which of those two descriptions triggered her sudden celebrity, just know that the night of the BCS title game she had around 2,300 Twitter followers. As of Wednesday evening, she had increased that number over a hundred fold to 273,000.
(Quick side bar: Is there a better metaphor for the absolute curb stomping that title game was than the girlfriends of the teams' repsective star players? McCarron dates Miss Alabama. Manti Te'o dates a girl who doesn't even actually exist.)
So Musberger's verbal groping of Webb was, apparently, the best of times and the worst of times, according to Disney, owner of ESPN and ABC.
The day after the game, ESPN public relations felt compelled to issue an apology on behalf of the network for Musberger's, um, overzealous behavior toward Webb:
"Have been asked on focus on @_KatherineWebb in BCS: We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that," ESPN's Mike Soltys posted on Twitter.
Truth be told, Musberger's words were not only harmless, they were a goddamn compliment! Seriously, if you're apologizing for your actions then by definition, you should be lauded for doing the opposite of that action, right? Well, the opposite of what Brent Musberger did would have been to call Webb a disgusting pig! That apology made no sense. (By the way, Brent Musberger apparently agrees with me.)
It made even less sense (yes, less than NO sense) when the offers began rolling in for Webb. On the heels of (and really as a direct result of) Musberger's attention getting proclamation of
his boner her beauty, Webb immediately was signed up as a Super Bowl correspondent for Inside Edition. She will also appear in this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
And here's the capper -- Webb will also appear on a celebrity based reality TV show called Celebrity Diving. Yes, Katherine Webb will be repeatedly shown in a bikini -- on the show, on the website, in commercials. What station will be carrying Celebrity Diving?
Why ABC, of course. Sister station to ESPN.
So the company that was apologizing for an announcer allegedly ogling a woman has hired that same woman for a celebrity reality show in which she will be wearing a bikini the whole time.
Got it? Good.
By the way, in the universe of celebrities, Webb is somewhere about a trillion miles outside of Pluto compared to the names they've signed up -- Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Louie Anderson, Keshia Knight-Pullam, Ndamukong Suh.
Here's hoping that Anderson does something to make Suh angry. I'd love to see ol' Louie on the business end of any of these maneuvers...
