Astros to Appeal CSN Bankruptcy Ruling
It just keeps getting weirder.
Bank in bankruptcy court today, the Astros announced they would appeal the ruling made this week that CSN would be afforded protection under Chapter 11. The Astros will be asking for a stay of the ruling issued by the court in a hearing set for next Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The Astros have said they do not believe it is their responsibility to act in the best interest of CSN, but rather in the best interest of the team, which is really the position they have taken all along.
If the Astros are able to win an appeal or even be granted a stay, it is likely they would do whatever is necessary to extricate themselves from the CSN deal. If they were able to do so, it would almost assuredly sink the network. At that point the Rockets and Astros would be forced to seek out a new television home for games.
It would also likely mean the disintegration of the network and the loss of numerous jobs for the people working there, never mind the contract problems it would create as CSN has deals with all sorts of other teams like the Dynamo, the Rice Owls, the University of Houston and others.
Additionally, were this all to come to a head right now, it could mean the Rockets would have to quickly find a home for their games as we are still smack dab in the middle of the season.
The Astros have been clear from the outset that they believe this is a bad deal for them, and it probably is. Unfortunately, losing the Astros would probably also mean losing what has been to this point an excellent if under-seen sports network that covers a ton of local sports and employes over 100 people.
As I've said all along, this continues to be an extremely contentious situation with a lot of bumps in the road. This is just the latest in a long series of potholes that need to be filled.
