Bagwell, Biggio Don't Make HOF, But Neither Do Any Other Players
As expected, the most dynamic duo of players in the history of the Astros franchise, Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio, were shut out of the Hall of Fame voting, Bagwell for the second consecutive year. But, Bagwell and Biggio are in good company because no one on the nominating ballot made it in. Nobody.
As great baseball writer Joe Posnanski discussed in his fantastic article about the 2013 ballot, there were lots of guys who didn't get in on their first ballot who were clearly deserving and a host of others who did but didn't get dozens of votes. Names like Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Jackie Robinson didn't get votes. In fact, no player has EVER been a unanimous choice for the Hall.
From his story about this year's class written prior to the announcement:
Craig Biggio with 3,000 hits, and Jeff Bagwell with a higher WAR than any first baseman not named Gehrig, Foxx or Pujols, and Curt Schilling with the best strikeout-to-walk ratio for any pitcher under modern rules, and Mike Piazza who hit better than any catcher before or since, and Tim Raines, who was probably the best pure base stealer in the game's history ... none of them will make it.
Of course, this year was a particularly interesting one because it was set against the backdrop of steroids. First-time nominees who are undoubtedly Hall of Fame players include Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, both believed to have been steroid users. Others, like Sammy Sosa, will never make it because it seems clear PEDs made him the player he was.
In order to enter the Hall, players must receive 75 percent of the Baseball Writers' Association of America voting members' votes. To remain on the ballot in future years, players must receive at least five percent of the vote.
Biggio fell only 34 votes short of induction.
